I own a 1999 VW and just read your story (on 10/10/03). I was sorry to learn of all the strife you've had over a car that is supposed to be all about the enjoyment of driving. Did you sue VW or the dealer? I was interested in whether there's been any resolution. I do agree with you absolutely that placing a hang tag on a used car that says "VW Certified" and the VW dealer selling you that car is a representation that the car meets the VW certification standards for resale. (I would think that even if the hang tag was NOT in the car -- after all you bought it from the dealer!) A failure by the dealer to actually inspect the car for compliance with those standards, to my own mind, is his problem, not yours. And I'd expect you would be entitled to return the car because you were misled about its certification. Smells rotten to me.
