Smoke from steering column

I just found this site while searching for Volkswagen Fires. I have a '97 Jetta that starting smoking from the steering column yesterday, and I am trying to determine if this is a recurring issue with this vehicle. I have owned it since new(now 180,000 miles), and have had other numerous minor electrical issues but never what could lead to a fire. If the plastic actually would start on fire, this car would be gone in a matter of minutes. Anyone else have this happen?

Guys, I now have this problem too.  A search on the web turned up many others with the same issue.  I don't think that we should have to pay for such a widespread and serious safety issue.

I plan on getting this fixed, but I have also started a complaint with the NHTSA (www.nhtsa.gov or 1-888-327-4236) to make this official.  If a sufficient number of complaints are received, a recall will be forced and we can file for reimbursement for parts and labor.

I encourage everyone having this issue to do the same.  Keep your receipts!

Good luck.

Stanz,

I looked up by vehicle (96 Jetta) the complaint on the smoke from your steering column and couldn't find it.  My husbands vehicle is currently in the shop for the same problem.  They are thinking it may be the ignition switch (?!) but really all that happened was the smoke came out and his wipers went.

I would like to add my complaint to yours but i couldn't find it.. has it been resolved ?

Thks

CJ-
I'm not sure how the NHTSA logs complaints like mine. I would advise you to submit a new complaint. Tell them what happened, save your receipts and save the old parts. If they get enough complaints from people like you and me they'll take action against VW and we will see notice in the mail. Remember this is the government we're talking about - it could take a while to see any response.

Good luck and let me know if I can be of further assistance.

I forgot to mention in my last post that I've had the new switch in for several months (has slightly different design from original) and I have not had any instances of the smoke or burning smells.
